Learning Enhancement

Children with special needs are no longer isolated and tucked away - they are part of local communities and part of our school. Instead of the child having to fit the education environment, the goal today is to ensure the education environment fits the child. Education is not "one size fits all". We seek to offer a range of choices so that our students can be matched with the teaching and learning environment that best suits their needs and aspirations.

The goals of Learning Enhancement at SCAS include:

  • Advocating for students with higher needs
  • Supporting the integration of students with higher needs into the school community
  • Sourcing available support funding and distributing it wisely
  • Assisting classroom teachers in the development of the skills and attitudes necessary to meet the needs of students
  • Serving as a link between classroom teacher, parents, support staff, middle management and parents
  • Assisting teachers in developing individualised standards through individual education plans for students
  • Incorporating ICT effectively to meet the teaching and learning needs of students

At St Columba strategies we use:

  • Close observation, data collection, monitoring, reviewing and modification of teaching strategies
  • Aide support in the classroom and the playground
  • Providing clear channels of communication between teachers, senior staff and parents as well as outside agencies
  • Modification of the existing curriculum and/or the physical environment
  • Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  • Liaison with outside agencies.

“Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible.” - Ronnie Oldham
