Middle School

The Middle School at SCAS is growing quickly with three classes in Year 6 this year and a rapidly decreasing number of places available for Year 7 in 2010. The Middle School is a vibrant community of students in Years 6 to 8. Students in the Middle School retain some of the structure of the traditional primary classroom, namely home rooms and core teachers, yet begin to experience greater opportunity to become independent and organised in a safe and predictable environment.

The familiarity of location and rapport developed with passionate teachers who choose to teach in the Middle School enhances the interest and learning of the students. Students are given many academic and co-curricular opportunities, with over 15 Music and Dance ensembles rehearsing each week and a myriad of sports to be involved in.

The Tutor system allows the students to have daily contact with their Tutor and provides opportunities for pastoral care and mentoring in small groups of students across the three Middle School years. Every student at St Columba is noticed and known by staff. Students are able to enjoy activities and meaningful leadership opportunities that would not be available to this age group in a traditional high school.

For the students, the Middle School years are a time of physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual change. These optimistic young men and women are finding their place in the world and we believe the structure and opportunities we provide at SCAS set them up for success and will help enable them to make a valuable contribution to society.
